A small gas tanker burst into flames on Friday afternoon near the Owode-Elede area, heading toward Ikorodu in Lagos. The fire, which started after a gas leak, created significant alarm among commuters. According to reports from emergency services, no deaths or injuries were documented.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service worked alongside the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to extinguish the blaze quickly. Officials stated the tanker experienced a mechanical issue while moving, causing gas to escape and catch fire. Investigations currently suggest the leak was the sole cause of the ignition.
LASTMA officials arrived at the scene to clear the wreckage and keep traffic flowing. General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki praised the rapid response, noting that the coordinated effort prevented a much larger disaster that could have threatened local property and infrastructure. To manage the resulting gridlock, authorities redirected vehicles onto the BRT lane.
Bakare-Oki emphasized the importance of teamwork during emergencies and encouraged drivers to follow traffic laws and listen to authorities. He affirmed that LASTMA is dedicated to maintaining safe, clear roads throughout Lagos State.
