Historically, Kwara State faced significant challenges in its public health sector, characterized by neglected infrastructure and limited access to quality medical services. Residents frequently sought care elsewhere or dealt with inadequate local facilities. However, under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the state has prioritized a comprehensive revitalization of its healthcare system by focusing on foundational improvements rather than just high-profile projects.
The government has rehabilitated nearly 200 primary healthcare centers, with 83 upgraded to modern Level-2 standards. These facilities now feature essential amenities like laboratories, labor rooms, and reliable power. Furthermore, secondary hospitals across the state have been renovated, and the General Hospital in Ilorin was converted into the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital, which now houses the largest Intensive Care Unit in North Central Nigeria.
Technological advancement is a cornerstone of this progress. The administration acquired advanced diagnostic tools, including a 1.5 Tesla MRI and a 160-slice CT scanner, to improve the detection of complex health conditions. Additionally, the construction of an Oncology Centre in collaboration with ASR Africa aims to reduce the burden of seeking cancer treatment outside the state.
To support these facilities, the government has addressed workforce shortages by implementing competitive salary structures, including CONMESS and CONHESS, and investing in continuous training for medical staff. Kwara also became the first state to provide the Medical Residency Training Fund. Accessibility is further supported by the KwaraCare Health Insurance Scheme, which covers over 100,000 vulnerable residents, alongside annual free medical outreaches that have assisted thousands.
These efforts have resulted in improved health indicators, such as reduced under-five mortality rates and high immunization coverage. Recognized with multiple awards, including honors from the Nigerian Medical Association, the administration has moved beyond empty promises, making quality, accessible healthcare a tangible reality for the people of Kwara.
