At Scotstoun Stadium, Kate O’Connor achieved a major milestone by winning Northern Ireland’s inaugural Commonwealth Games gold medal in the heptathlon. With a total score of 6569 points, the 25-year-old athlete ended an eight-year wait for a new champion in this event. This victory marks her first senior outdoor gold medal, building on her previous performances where she placed eighth in 2018 and took silver in 2022.
The competition saw England’s Jade O’Dowda secure the silver medal, while Australia’s Tori West earned the bronze. O’Connor, who entered the games as the favorite following the absence of Katrina Johnson-Thompson, validated her top-seeded status. Despite struggling with a 12.85m throw in the shot put during a rainy session, she recovered effectively to dominate her 200m heat with a time of 24.14 seconds.
By the start of the second day, O’Connor held a 49-point lead. She extended this advantage significantly through strong performances in the long jump and javelin. She ultimately finished the 800m in 2:10.45 to clinch the win, marking the first time a Northern Irish athlete has claimed a multi-event gold since Dame Mary Peters in 1974. Her teammate Anna McCauley concluded the event in eighth place.
