Kano State Legislature passes legislation to replace KNUPDA

Kano State lawmakers have replaced the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority with two new agencies to improve city planning and development standards.

The Kano State House of Assembly has officially ratified the Kano State Physical Planning and Development Control Bill of 2026. This legislative move results in the immediate dissolution of the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA).

Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore presided over the plenary session on Tuesday where the bill underwent its second and third readings before final approval at the Committee of the Whole. Lawan Hussaini, the Majority Leader representing Dala Constituency, explained that two new metropolitan development agencies will replace the defunct authority.

These agencies will function under the guidance of the Kano State Ministry of Land and Physical Planning, absorbing all functions previously managed by KNUPDA. Their core responsibilities include granting building permits, managing urban renewal projects, and ensuring all city planning activities strictly follow environmental and developmental codes.

Property owners and developers are now mandated to secure official authorization from these new bodies before initiating any construction or renovation projects. The agencies are also empowered to perform field inspections to verify that building activities align with approved designs and regional standards.

Lawan Hussaini emphasized that this institutional overhaul aims to foster systematic growth. The ultimate objective is to elevate Kano to a modern standard that aligns with global urban planning expectations.
