The Kano State Government has instructed the State Hisba Board to begin preparations for the wedding of at least 2,000 couples under its mass wedding initiative.

Deputy Commander-General of the board, Sheikh Mujahid Aminudeen, confirmed the development in a telephone interview on Thursday, noting that plans are underway to ensure a smooth event as directed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

While the exact date has not been announced, he explained that certain procedures must be followed. All prospective couples are required to register and undergo medical screenings, including tests for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, genotype, and drug use. Failure to complete the screening will lead to automatic disqualification.

Governor Yusuf’s administration revived the mass wedding programme to support women, widows, divorcees, and spinsters whose families cannot afford wedding costs. The initiative also seeks to curb prostitution and other social issues in the state.
