Jingye Group plans legal action over UK government’s seizure of British Steel

Jingye Group has vowed to pursue legal compensation after the UK government took full ownership of the Scunthorpe steelworks to prevent its closure.

Jingye Group, the former owner of British Steel, has announced its intention to sue the British government for compensation following the recent nationalization of the struggling steel producer. The UK assumed control of the Scunthorpe facility this past Thursday, citing a need to preserve essential national infrastructure after Jingye suggested the site was no longer financially viable.

Jingye acquired the plant in 2020 but eventually sought to close it, reporting daily losses of approximately £700,000. While the government intervened in operations back in April 2025, full nationalization was required to grant officials final decision-making authority over the site’s future. An independent assessor will eventually determine if any compensation is owed to the Chinese firm, according to government guidelines expected this autumn.

This move has caused significant diplomatic friction between London and Beijing, especially as incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham prepares to assume office. China’s Ministry of Commerce has publicly condemned the takeover, characterizing it as a violation of Jingye’s corporate rights and a potential deterrent to future Chinese investment in the UK. Conversely, the UK government maintains that negotiations failed because the proposed terms did not offer adequate value to British taxpayers.

Business Secretary Peter Kyle defended the state takeover, stating that primary steel production is critical to national security. The facility currently supports roughly 2,700 jobs in North Lincolnshire, though maintaining operations currently costs the state around £1.3 million daily. Despite these expenses, the government intends to fund the plant’s immediate future to prevent total industrial collapse.
