The Jigawa State Police Command has taken eight individuals into custody regarding multiple homicide cases and the recent disorder at Gujungu Market in Taura. Police spokesperson SP Lawan Shiisu Adam confirmed the arrests on Monday.
In Ringim, Saminu Ibrahim, 20, was arrested for the stabbing death of a 20-year-old in Dabigel Village. The victim passed away in the hospital after being wounded by a sharp tool. Ibrahim is being held for further investigation.
Regarding the July 26 Gujungu Market violence, authorities apprehended Muhammed Muhammed and Faridu Mohammed. That unrest started after a soldier reportedly stabbed 25-year-old Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim to death. Following the killing, attackers targeted a police station and set shops on fire. Police are searching for other participants who escaped.
Additionally, six men were arrested for the August 2 murder of a vigilante member during the market unrest’s aftermath. Two vigilantes were assaulted with sticks and machetes, resulting in one fatality. The suspects include Isiyaku Abdulkarim, Yahaya Habu, Ibrahim Abubakar, Audu Mamman Janare, Ya’u Duga, and Mamman Musa. Authorities also recovered six abandoned cows.
The police are working to prosecute those involved while engaging with local leaders, Miyetti Allah, and community representatives to resolve the underlying issues at the market and restore peace.
