Italy Launches Antitrust Probe Into Meta for ‘Imposing’ AI Chatbot on WhatsApp Users
Italy has launched an investigation into Meta over concerns that it may have violated European Union competition laws by integrating its artificial intelligence tool, Meta AI, into WhatsApp without giving users a clear choice. The Italian antitrust authority announced on Wednesday that it began the probe after Meta—owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—introduced the AI service into WhatsApp earlier this year. The watchdog stated that Meta, which holds a dominant position in consumer communication apps, may have effectively “imposed” its AI tool on users by pre-installing it on WhatsApp. Authorities warned that this move could steer Meta’s large customer base into the growing AI market, not through open competition, but by bundling services together in a way that limits user choice and disadvantages rivals. By combining WhatsApp and Meta AI, the company may be unfairly leveraging its market power to establish dominance in a separate, emerging sector. Italian officials, along with the country’s Financial Police, carried out an inspection at Meta’s Italian offices on Tuesday as part of the investigation. They are working closely with relevant departments within the European Commission. The antitrust agency also flagged concerns that users could become dependent on Meta AI over time, as the tool may grow more effective by learning from users’ data, gradually locking them into the service. tiffany stratton nude hotaustriancouple This, the agency says, poses further risks to fair competition in the AI market.
