Iranian Players Relocated After Teammate Exposes Secret Asylum Site

A group of Iranian women’s soccer players seeking refuge in Australia were forced into an emergency evacuation after a teammate compromised their hidden location.

Following their team’s participation in a recent tournament, seven members were granted asylum due to fears of state persecution; they had been labeled “traitors” in Iran for their refusal to perform the national anthem.

However, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke revealed that one player changed her mind after communicating with teammates who had chosen to return home.

Identified by Iranian media outlets as Mohaddeseh Zolfi, the player contacted the Iranian embassy in Australia, inadvertently—or intentionally—revealing the coordinates of the safe house where the defecting athletes were being held.

In response to the security breach, Minister Burke ordered an immediate relocation of the remaining six players to an undisclosed site. He confirmed that while officials verified Zolfi’s choice to withdraw was voluntary, the disclosure of the safe house necessitated swift action to ensure the group’s safety.

While Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has praised the women’s courage, Iran’s football authorities have retaliated by accusing the Australian government of “kidnapping” the athletes and coercing them into staying.
