This incident has reignited discussions regarding hybrid warfare within Europe. The interior minister has characterized this event as a significant escalation in risk, suggesting the potential involvement of foreign actors.
While no definitive evidence directly links Russia to the drone, and Moscow denies any involvement, officials remain cautious. Investigations from 2024 revealed a network of Russian-backed proxies in Poland and Lithuania previously tasked with transporting explosives and drone components. Case documents indicate these items were sometimes concealed in food containers, with detonators hidden inside headphones.
The drone was discovered late Tuesday, prompting a lockdown and the deployment of a bomb disposal unit. Nearby, several Ukrainian Antonov cargo planes were stationed on the tarmac. Additionally, a DHL flight departing from the airport reported a mid-air collision with an unidentified object, though it is not yet confirmed if this was a second device.
