Inter Miami defeated in Leagues Cup during Lionel Messi’s bereavement

Lionel Messi missed Inter Miami’s 2-1 Leagues Cup loss to Monterrey due to the death of his father, Jorge Messi.

Inter Miami suffered a 2-1 defeat against Monterrey this Saturday in a Leagues Cup encounter while team captain Lionel Messi was away following the passing of his father, Jorge Messi. The 68-year-old died in Argentina, prompting the star player to travel home on Saturday night.

The club issued an official statement extending their condolences to the Messi family. Prior to kickoff, a minute of silence was held to honor the memory of Jorge Messi.

Rodrigo De Paul put Inter Miami ahead in the 32nd minute. During the celebration, he displayed a number 10 shirt beneath his own jersey as a sign of solidarity with his teammate. However, the lead vanished when Hugo Cuypers equalized for the Mexican club shortly after halftime. Diego Rossi secured the victory for Monterrey with a decisive goal in the 90th minute.

Miami, the current Major League Soccer titleholders, previously defeated Atletico San Luis 4-2. The team is scheduled to play Leon this Wednesday.
