Trouble began earlier on Bishop Street in Londonderry, resulting in a police officer requiring hospital treatment. During the match, tensions escalated to the point where families were forced to flee onto the pitch for safety.
The referee paused the game for 14 minutes as police intervened at the request of club officials to stabilize the crowd. PSNI Chief Inspector Graeme Craig condemned the behavior of individuals who compromised public safety. Derry City manager Tiernan Lynch expressed deep concern, noting the fear felt by parents, including himself, as they lost sight of their children in the stands.
Witnesses described CSKA supporters attempting to force their way into the home sections while throwing objects and hurling abuse. Councillor Rory Farrell and spectator Malcolm McCausland both highlighted that standard security personnel were ill-equipped to handle such aggression.
