INEC Secures Over N500 Billion for 2027 General Elections

INEC has received over N500 billion toward the 2027 elections, representing more than 50 percent of its total budget, though outstanding debts from previous polls remain a concern.

Mohammed Haruna, the Commissioner for Information and Voter Education at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), confirmed that the agency has obtained more than N500 billion for the 2027 election cycle. This figure accounts for over half of the commission’s total budget.

Speaking to Arise News, Haruna acknowledged the funding as a favorable step. Yet, he noted that the agency remains burdened by unpaid obligations from prior election cycles. He specifically mentioned that INEC owes contractors approximately N6 billion and is awaiting a balance of over N20 billion from previous statutory allocations.

Despite these financial hurdles, Haruna emphasized that administrative preparations are already underway. The commission is actively working on the procurement of additional Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) units and other vital equipment. Officials have already visited China to secure necessary technology, ensuring that the infrastructure for the 2027 polls is ready regardless of the funding timeline.
