Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), recently shared insights into the heavy burdens accompanying his role. He revealed that since assuming his position as the country’s top electoral official, he has been unable to return to his hometown due to the intense demands of his office. Furthermore, he highlighted that the spread of fake news poses a significant hurdle to maintaining the integrity of digital-age elections.
Amupitan made these comments while hosting a delegation from the Okun Development Association, headed by President-General Ambassador Akenson Rotimi, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. According to an official INEC social media update, the Chairman explained that his busy schedule previously hindered him from meeting with the group.
Reflecting on his duties, Amupitan termed his appointment as a summons to public service, noting that the management of Nigeria’s polls demands unwavering honesty and impartiality. He expressed gratitude to the Okun community for their ongoing support. Meanwhile, Ambassador Rotimi praised Amupitan’s appointment, labeling it a testament to his competence. He emphasized that the Okun people remain proud of his service and will continue to back his efforts to strengthen the nation’s democratic processes.
