Ian Wright, the ex-Arsenal and England forward, has publicly condemned FIFA regarding the unacceptable quality of the field during the World Cup final. This criticism emerged after Spain defeated Argentina at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium to claim the global title.
While the European champions dictated the pace of Sunday’s match, they struggled to score against an Argentina squad that did not manage a single shot throughout regulation. Spain’s pursuit of a second championship gained momentum in stoppage time when Enzo Fernandez was dismissed after picking up a second yellow card.
Argentina successfully defended against Spain through the initial half of extra time, but Ferran Torres eventually scored in the 106th minute. Playing with a numerical disadvantage, Argentina failed to recover and missed their opportunity for successive World Cup wins.
The condition of the grass became a major subject of debate online, with Wright blaming the sub-par surface for the game’s sluggish opening. Speaking on ITV, the former player stated that a World Cup final should not be held on such a ridiculous pitch.
Spain now celebrates their first trophy since 2010, while Argentina falls just short of securing back-to-back world titles.
