My association with Professor Barth Nnaji dates back to a November 2000 visit to the University of Pittsburgh. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by his secretary and taken to his impressive office where he worked as a distinguished professor of Robotics Engineering. A striking detail in his office was an Igbo traditional hand fan, or Akupe, bearing the title Onwa Nkanu, which represents the deep respect held for him by Nkanu traditional rulers.
Professor Nnaji is a pioneer in the field of robotics and Artificial Intelligence, technologies that have significantly reshaped our modern world. His academic journey includes education at St. John’s University and a post-doctorate in AI and Robotics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served as the ALCOA Foundation Distinguished Professor of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh and held a professorship at the University of Pennsylvania. Throughout his career, he has received numerous accolades, including the CON, NNOM, OON, FAS, and FAEng.
Beyond his academic achievements in the United States, Nnaji has contributed greatly to Nigeria. He served twice as the Minister of Power and founded Geometric Power Limited. Through his company, he has demonstrated that stable electricity is possible, notably within the Aba ring-fenced zone. His work provides a blueprint for government cooperation to address Nigeria’s persistent power challenges.
From his early days as a student at Emene High School in Enugu to his global impact, Barth Nnaji has been an inspiration. Hailing from Umuode, Enugu State, he has brought international recognition to his home region. As he celebrates his 70th birthday, he remains a vital role model for future generations.
