A homeless woman in Florida shocked a courtroom on Tuesday, October 14, when she begged to remain in jail after being granted release on a minor drug paraphernalia charge.
During her initial appearance, which was expected to end with a quick plea deal, the woman interrupted proceedings and pleaded for more jail time. She initially requested 60 additional days behind bars, then lowered it to 30, explaining she needed time to save money for a temporary place to stay.
Her voice trembled as she told the judge that even one extra night would make a difference.
In response, the judge paused and suggested an alternative: setting a $500 bond and advising her not to post it if she had nowhere else to go, effectively allowing her to remain in custody.
A public defender then stepped in to assist her with next steps.
The courtroom moment, captured on video, has since gone viral, sparking widespread discussions about the struggles faced by people experiencing homelessness.
