Harsh Critique from Stockholm: Britain’s Role in Nigerian Corruption

Kio Amachree challenges the United Kingdom’s role as a financial hub for looted Nigerian wealth, accusing British authorities of complicity in systemic corruption.

Kio Amachree, the president of Worldview International and a resident of Sweden, has emerged as a significant voice criticizing the current Nigerian administration. Amachree, a native of Rivers State, argues that the United Kingdom is not a passive observer of Nigerian corruption but rather a primary beneficiary and facilitator. He highlights his personal struggle to engage British institutions regarding his documented evidence of illicit financial activities.

Amachree emphasizes that the Serious Fraud Office was the only British institution to engage with his findings, while media outlets and government ministers remained silent. He suggests this inaction is intentional, citing figures from the National Crime Agency that indicate massive sums of money are laundered through London annually. He compares the situation to the legal principle that receiving stolen goods carries the same guilt as the theft itself.

The critique points to a long-standing pattern of collaboration, noting that historical figures like Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and the late Sani Abacha utilized British financial channels to hide wealth. Amachree further questions the British government’s warm reception of President Bola Tinubu, pointing to Tinubu’s 1993 forfeiture of funds linked to narcotics trafficking in U.S. courts, as well as the involvement of individuals like Gilbert Chagoury in modern government contracts.

Ultimately, Amachree contends that post-Brexit economic desperation has led the UK to ignore the origins of Nigerian capital to maintain trade surpluses and investment. He concludes that Britain must move beyond symbolic gestures and begin prosecuting the bankers, lawyers, and agents who facilitate these financial crimes, rather than simply welcoming those who continue to drain Nigeria’s resources.
