Governor Alia advocates for immediate establishment of state police

Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia supports the creation of state police to combat national insecurity, arguing that local forces are better equipped to handle terrain-specific challenges.

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has publicly endorsed the formation of state-level police forces in Nigeria, arguing that this measure is necessary to address the country’s rising insecurity. Speaking on Arise Television this Thursday, Alia expressed that such a initiative should have been implemented well in advance.

The Governor noted that the federal police force is currently overburdened by the immense volume of tasks, while the military often lacks necessary familiarity with specific local landscapes. He argued that local police forces would have better command and control capabilities. Alia highlighted that discussions are already underway within the National and State Assemblies to address public concerns regarding the transition.

Reflecting on his advocacy, Alia mentioned he was one of the earliest supporters of this concept. He emphasized that for regions like Benue, which have faced significant security challenges and limited external intervention, local policing is an essential step that should have been taken long ago.
