Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced that seven students from Gateway ICT Polytechnic in Saapade, who were abducted last week, have been safely rescued. The governor emphasized that no ransom payments were made to secure their freedom.
The successful operation involved a collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force, military units, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun, and local community security groups. Governor Abiodun noted that he requested aerial support from the Inspector-General of Police on August 3, which significantly bolstered the search efforts.
Five students were initially rescued and reunited with their families, while the final two were liberated following a coordinated aerial and ground mission. One student suffered a gunshot wound but is currently in stable condition after receiving medical care. Two suspects involved in the kidnapping have been taken into custody, and authorities continue to pursue the remaining gang members.
During the briefing, Ogun State Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni reaffirmed that no money changed hands during the rescue. He confirmed that the students underwent medical evaluations at police facilities before returning home. Governor Abiodun reiterated that the state will continue to prioritize security technology and intelligence to ensure that criminal elements have no safe haven within the region.
