Ghanaian authorities thwart bank heist in Labone, leaving two dead

Ghanaian police stopped a multi-bank robbery plot in Labone on August 13, 2026, resulting in one arrest and the deaths of two suspected robbers.

On Thursday, August 13, 2026, the Ghana Police Service successfully prevented a coordinated robbery attempt targeting GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank in Accra’s Labone district. Acting on advance intelligence, law enforcement moved into the area around 10:45 am and identified several suspects positioned near the financial institutions.

As authorities approached, the suspects attempted to flee in two separate vehicles, triggering a pursuit. Officers managed to intercept one vehicle and capture Augustine Okechuku Maazi, a Nigerian national, though his accomplice managed to evade capture. The occupants of the second vehicle fired upon the police, resulting in an exchange of gunfire that left two suspects dead.

Police investigators seized a Toyota Highlander, a Hyundai Tucson, and a blow pistol from the scene. Maazi is currently detained and cooperating with investigators, while the deceased individuals have been moved to a local morgue for pending autopsies and identification.
