German Drowning Deaths Reach 16-Year High Following Record June Heat

Official figures show 99 drownings occurred in Germany during June, the highest number recorded since the historic 2003 heatwave.

Official data indicates that 99 individuals lost their lives to drowning in Germany throughout June, marking the highest casualty count since the extreme European heatwave of 2003. During that previous period, 107 people perished.

A sweltering heatwave impacted western Europe last month, driving temperatures in Germany to a peak of 41.7 degrees Celsius. This intense period also triggered wildfires and significant disruptions to rail transportation.

According to the DLRG, the national lifeguarding federation, the majority of victims were young men. Out of those with recorded ages, 40 were under the age of 30, and over 90 percent were male. DLRG president Ute Vogt noted that men frequently overestimate their capabilities and are more prone to risky behavior or entering the water while intoxicated. Most of these tragic incidents occurred in natural bodies of water, such as lakes and rivers.
