Ganduje Attributes Frequent Political Defections to Lack of Party Ideology

Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje argues that the absence of ideological foundations in Nigerian political parties is driving frequent defections and personal political maneuvering.

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, stated on Wednesday that the frequent movement of politicians between parties is rooted in a lack of clear ideology. Speaking at the launch of the book ‘Nigeria’s Journey to Democratic Rule’ by journalist Onyekachi Eze-Odezulu in Abuja, he argued that personal interest has overtaken principles in modern politics.

Ganduje noted that political organizations should rely on distinct philosophies and policy goals. He emphasized that the current absence of ideological frameworks weakens party structures and confuses voters seeking policy alternatives. With the 2027 elections approaching, he urged for more robust internal democracy and issue-oriented political engagement to rebuild public trust.

Reflecting on the book, the former chairman underscored that democracy extends beyond quadrennial elections. He highlighted the necessity of the rule of law, constitutional respect, and credible electoral management to ensure national stability. Senator Tanko Al-Makura, chairman of the UBEC board, echoed these sentiments, urging citizens to safeguard the 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance Nigeria has achieved. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, also praised the book as a vital resource for understanding the country’s transition from military rule, confirming that the Tinubu administration is dedicated to strengthening democratic institutions through its policy agenda.
