On Tuesday, scholars at the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, blocked the school’s primary entrance to protest against frequent criminal attacks on those residing outside the campus. The demonstration caused significant traffic delays on the Minna–Bida Road starting early in the morning.
Protesters denied entry to senior university administrators, including the Vice-Chancellor, whose efforts to negotiate were rebuffed. As a result of the unrest, scheduled examinations for 100- and 300-level students were put on hold. The tension stemmed from a recent rise in violence, including a reported fatality three days prior and multiple injuries sustained during a robbery on Monday night.
Students expressed deep frustration, noting that despite paying a mandatory annual security fee of N10,000, they remain vulnerable to theft and physical harm. Professor Bashir Ganiyu, the Dean of Student Affairs, stated that the institution is coordinating with the Niger State Police Command and local vigilante groups to bolster safety measures in surrounding neighborhoods.
