Fulani Community in Plateau State Claims Harassment by DSS

Fulani leaders in Plateau State have accused DSS operatives of recurring human rights abuses, including assault, theft, and sexual harassment, during recent raids in the Barkin Ladi area.

Members of the Fulani population residing in Kwok, located within the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, have publicly alleged that Department of State Services (DSS) agents are engaging in systematic intimidation and the violation of their fundamental human rights. These claims follow a series of recent security operations conducted in their neighborhood.

Community representative Yusuf Muhammad released a video on social media detailing these grievances. He reported that security personnel have repeatedly raided their homes, assaulted residents, destroyed belongings, detained individuals without clear justification, and perpetrated acts of sexual violence against women. According to Muhammad, the officers frequently seize personal valuables during these incursions.

Muhammad described a particularly violent incident on Saturday, noting that officers fired weapons indiscriminately, causing widespread fear and injuries to both children and adults. He insisted that the community members are law-abiding Nigerian citizens who intend to pursue legal channels to secure justice for these abuses.

Another leader from the area, Abubakar Usman, expressed shock over the targeted nature of these raids. He argued that the security agencies have no reason to harass the community, suggesting that if authorities have legitimate concerns regarding specific individuals, they should collaborate with local leaders instead of resorting to aggression.
