FRSC reports one fatality and three injuries in Enugu-Onitsha Expressway collision

A collision between a cement trailer and a gas tanker at Ugwu Onyeama resulted in one death and three injuries, prompting a major emergency response to prevent a fire.

A road crash involving a cement-hauling trailer and a vehicle transporting liquefied natural gas took place on Monday evening at Ugwu Onyeama on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway. Authorities have clarified that while rumors suggested three deaths, only one individual perished in the incident, while three others suffered injuries. Route Commander Theophilus Okoduwa of the FRSC Enugu Sector confirmed that the four adult males involved in the wreck were assisted by soldiers and emergency workers.

Emergency crews faced a dangerous environment characterized by leaking gas and intense heat. The Federal Fire Service arrived within minutes of being alerted, with Divisional Superintendent Ucheagwu Maxwell leading a team that utilized foam and water to prevent a catastrophic explosion. The Enugu State Fire Service also joined the operation to help secure the scene.

While officials continue to probe the exact cause of the collision, witnesses suggested that a trailer from the Dangote fleet experienced brake failure, leading it to slam into the gas tanker. The injured survivors were transported to local hospitals for urgent medical care.
