Ipswich Town has adopted a fresh approach to recruitment following their promotion to the Premier League. As the division’s fourth-highest net spender this summer, the club has moved away from its previous reliance on domestic talent.
Under former manager Kieran McKenna, the team focused on players familiar with English football, a strategy that brought success in lower divisions but struggled in the top flight during the 2024-25 season. New manager Gary O’Neil is now looking abroad to bridge the performance gap. The club has secured signatures from players across the globe, including the first Brazilians to join the squad, such as record-signing Emersonn, as well as talent from Serbia and Japan.
Chairman Mark Ashton stated the club needs to be bolder. This shift aims to inject more athleticism and physical power into a squad that found itself outmatched in the Premier League previously. With investments exceeding £100m, the club is prioritizing players capable of performing at a higher tempo, though they still face the significant challenge of establishing themselves as a permanent fixture in the top flight.
