Nehemiah Danjuma recently secured a significant place in Nigeria’s legal record by becoming the first deaf individual from Northern Nigeria to be called to the Bar. His path to this professional achievement serves as a powerful example of perseverance and the importance of inclusive opportunities.
Danjuma officially reached this milestone during the 2026 Nigerian Bar ceremonies. He shared the news on social media, noting his pride in making history for his region. Supporters and advocates for disability rights have lauded his ability to push past systemic hurdles to reach his professional goals.
His road to success was not easy. After being denied a law admission at the University of Ilorin in 2017—where he was offered Primary Education instead—he refused to settle. He reapplied the following year, eventually securing a spot in the Common Law program. He finished his degree with a Second Class Upper before heading to the Nigerian Law School in Abuja.
Currently, Danjuma is a vocal champion for disability rights. His career interests span human rights, labor laws, and the implementation of assistive technologies. He works as the Programmes Lead at the Voice of Disability Initiative, where he manages inclusion-focused projects and outreach efforts.
His leadership experience is extensive. During his time at university, he acted as a senator for students with disabilities and served two terms as the national head of the National Association of Nigerian Deaf Students. Furthermore, his influence reaches an international stage, having spent three years as a Youth Adviser for the European Union Youth Sounding Board in Nigeria.
