Senegal is the latest African side to exit the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 3-2 loss to Belgium during Wednesday’s Round of 32 match. Belgium executed a late comeback after trailing 2-0 with only four minutes of regulation left, eventually securing their place in the last 16 via a Youri Tielemans penalty deep into stoppage time.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo also saw their tournament run end on Wednesday after a 2-1 defeat to England. The Leopards initially held the lead after Brian Cipenga scored against Jordan Pickford. Nevertheless, Harry Kane powered England back into the game with two goals, moving his team into a Round of 16 encounter against co-host Mexico.
As of now, five African teams still compete in the tournament, all hoping to capture the continent’s first-ever World Cup championship.
