Kyuden Voltex, a rugby club based in Fukuoka, has confirmed the tragic death of their player Saimoni Vunilagi. The 26-year-old Fijian athlete reportedly suffered from severe heatstroke symptoms following a team training session on August 3, 2026. Despite being rushed to a medical facility for urgent care, Vunilagi passed away on Friday, August 7.
Fukuoka recorded temperatures hitting 35 degrees Celsius during the week of the incident. In an official statement, the club expressed deep sorrow, noting that Vunilagi had only joined their ranks in July. His teammates and staff praised his energetic personality and potential to impact the upcoming season. The organization has requested privacy for the player’s family during this difficult time.
Vunilagi, a powerful forward standing 6ft 5in, previously played for Tokyo Sungoliath in Japan Rugby League One. He began his professional rugby journey in 2023 after completing his university studies in the country. Japan Rugby League One also released a statement offering their condolences to the grieving family and the entire Kyuden Voltex organization.
