Federal Government instructs FUTO Vice-Chancellor to rescind appointments of 24 aides

The Nigerian government has issued a directive to the FUTO vice-chancellor demanding the immediate reversal of his appointment of 24 aides due to alleged procedural breaches.

Federal authorities have reportedly instructed Professor Ikechukwu Dozie, the vice-chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), to cancel the appointment of twenty-four aides immediately. A leaked directive dated June 25, 2026, purportedly signed by the acting director of university education, Kareem O. L., on behalf of the education minister, cited procedural violations as the justification for this order.

Professor Dozie, who took office as the university’s ninth vice-chancellor on June 19, 2026, faced scrutiny following reports of these numerous appointments. The ministry characterized the actions as irregular and in violation of existing policies and due process standards required within the Nigerian federal university system. The vice-chancellor has been ordered to provide proof that he has complied with this request.

The ministry also ordered Professor Dozie to appear in Abuja on June 29 for a meeting regarding the matter. The directive was copied to the National Universities Commission, signaling the gravity of the situation. Currently, no official comments have been provided by FUTO administration or the Ministry of Education regarding this communication.
