The Federal Government began a nationwide rollout of the Renewed Hope agricultural seeds on Thursday to assist farmers. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Senator Abubakar Kyari introduced the program in Jigawa State, explaining that it intends to address seed scarcities and rainfall delays.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sanctioned this emergency measure to help farmers secure high-quality seeds before the planting season ends. This response addresses climate disruptions that impacted agricultural zones across Nigeria, particularly in regions facing erratic weather patterns. Many farmers, specifically in the north, faced severe losses after dry spells ruined early crops.
Kyari noted that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency had predicted long dry periods between June and August, which unfortunately occurred. To help mitigate these losses, the government is providing 32 metric tonnes of cowpea, nine metric tonnes of groundnut, and 8.35 metric tonnes of sesame seeds to each state involved. These specific crops were chosen for their ability to mature quickly, allowing farmers a chance to yield a harvest despite the late start.
Approximately 5,000 smallholder households in Jigawa State will receive aid in the initial phase. The National Agricultural Seed Council has certified all materials to ensure quality and prevent the use of substandard seeds. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy aimed at improving seed security nationwide.
Deputy Governor Engr Aminu Usman Gumel, representing Governor Umar Namadi, praised the initiative for providing essential relief. The All Farmers Association of Nigeria also expressed appreciation, encouraging farmers to utilize these resources efficiently.
