Ayodele Fayose, chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency, suggests that Nigeria’s increasing population is tied to the country’s energy crisis. He argues that the absence of electricity forces citizens to remain at home during evening hours.
During an interview with Arise News, Fayose noted that limited options for recreation and nightlife after dark leave residents with little to do. He remarked that once it gets dark at 7:00 p.m., the lack of external entertainment influences domestic behavior. Consequently, he claims this contributes to a higher birth rate as families spend more time together in the absence of other activities.
Fayose emphasized that providing consistent power would transform evening routines and encourage the development of a more active nightlife. He believes that by offering alternatives to staying home, the government can shift social patterns across the country.
