Father of Georgia School Shooting Suspect Seeks Protection After Receiving ‘Incalculable’ Threats in Jail
The father of a Georgia school shooting suspect, who is accused of killing four people, has requested a judge to grant him protection from fellow inmates due to the “incalculable number of threats” he is facing in prison.
In a court filing on Wednesday, attorneys Jimmy Berry and Brian Hobbs argued that Colin Gray, who is being held without bond, is at risk among the general prison population.
Gray is charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter for allegedly allowing his son, Colt Gray, access to the weapon used in last week’s shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, east of Atlanta.
Gray’s lawyers stated that widespread media coverage and social media discussions about the case have led to numerous threats from inmates, some of which call for violence or even death against him.
They emphasized that Gray should be kept separate from other inmates at the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office to ensure his safety.
The defense lawyers noted that the shooting has deeply impacted the Winder community and the greater Barrow County area.
“It is certain that those feelings of anger and retribution manifested in the collective psyche, of both the public and the community at large, are not also represented in the individuals currently incarcerated with the Defendant at the Barrow County Detention Center,” they wrote in a motion filed Wednesday in Barrow County Superior Court.
“In fact, so many lives in the community of Barrow County have been touched in unfathomable ways, it would be reckless to assume there are NO inmates, either currently or in the near future, being housed in the Barrow County Detention, who wish to harm the Defendant,” they wrote.
