Falconets Forward Janet Akekoromowei Signs With Benfica

Nigerian youth international and former Bayelsa Queens standout Janet Akekoromowei has officially signed with Portuguese club Benfica.

Janet Akekoromowei, a striker for the Falconets, has officially joined the ranks of the Portuguese titleholders, Benfica. The 18-year-old athlete transitions to the European club from her previous team, the Nigeria Women Football League side, Bayelsa Queens.

Recognition of her talent is high, as Akekoromowei secured the Most Valuable Player award in the NWFL last season. Her career path saw a shift earlier this year; while she had been under consideration by the Spanish powerhouse Barcelona, that opportunity did not proceed following an injury she suffered while representing her country in February.

Most recently, Akekoromowei participated in the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, where she appeared in three contests for the Falconets. Beyond her youth level experience, she has also earned appearances for the senior Nigerian national team.
