The European Union Parliament recently passed a significant resolution, approved by 510 to 1, to denounce the continuous mistreatment of Christians within Nigeria. The action was prompted specifically by a recent violent attack in Kawel village, situated in the Bokkos area of Plateau State. Legislators extended their sympathy to the bereaved families and pledged to uphold the right to religious freedom.
Lawmakers highlighted a concerning increase in kidnapping incidents, noting that these crimes heavily affect women and minors. Consequently, they called upon Nigerian officials to enhance their anti-terrorism strategies. The assembly emphasized the need for rigorous investigations to hold Boko Haram and similar factions accountable, aiming to dismantle the existing trend of lawlessness.
Beyond security operations, the resolution suggests that the Nigerian government improve civilian safety measures, share intelligence regarding threats, and bolster regional peace efforts. Additionally, the Parliament advised focusing on sustainable land use and food security to mitigate environmental pressures contributing to local violence. The EU Special Envoy for the Promotion of Freedom of Religion has been requested to closely monitor the threats facing Christian and other vulnerable religious populations in the country.
