Nineteen-year-old Annabel has finally returned to her home in Ovwiamuge, Delta State, after escaping a forced prostitution ring in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Her journey home was facilitated by a viral social media video, which allowed concerned individuals to identify her and alert her family.
Annabel, who was lured to the foreign country under false pretenses of legitimate employment, was abandoned on the streets after refusing to participate in exploitation. Her rescue was spearheaded by Stella Okotete through the Erhuvwuoghene Girl Child Right Foundation, in collaboration with local community leaders. Ughelli North Local Government Chairman, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, also pledged his support for her rehabilitation.
The teenager is now focused on her long-term goal of becoming a nurse. Supporters are currently coordinating her medical care and enrollment back into school. This case highlights the persistent dangers of human trafficking and the vital role of community vigilance in protecting vulnerable youth from exploitation.
