England and Wales Cricket Board rejects Lord’s for Euro Nations Cup

The ECB has blocked plans to host a European T20 cricket tournament final at Lord’s, citing concerns over scheduling conflicts and domestic priorities.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has denied permission to host the final of a proposed European T20 cricket tournament at Lord’s. The competition, aimed at growing the sport through an annual men’s and women’s event, was initiated by cricket boards in Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands. These organizations aimed for a launch as early as next summer.

While the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) reportedly expressed willingness to provide Lord’s and the Wormsley venue for matches, the ECB refused to approve the necessary staging agreements. This decision effectively prevents the international tournament from being held within English jurisdiction. Sources suggest the governing body worried that hosting external international matches during the busy domestic season would upset county teams.

ECB chief executive Richard Gould had previously highlighted scheduling conflicts regarding England’s own packed international calendar. Despite potential benefits of fostering regional rivalries, the board remains skeptical, mirroring its historical hesitation toward such European ventures. This stance has caused frustration among neighboring nations, who view the lack of support as a missed opportunity for the sport’s regional development. An International Cricket Council official urged the ECB to take a broader view, suggesting that regional growth would ultimately benefit the entire cricketing community.
