EFCC renews prosecution of former Kaduna councillor for N16 million fraud

The EFCC has re-arraigned former Kaduna councillor Theophilus Madami for an alleged N16.08 million pasta fraud, with the court ordering his remand pending a bail ruling.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought Theophilus Madami, a former Kaduna South Local Government councillor, back to court to face charges related to an alleged N16.08 million fraud. This legal action follows an earlier attempt to prosecute the official, which began in 2019.

During the session presided over by Justice A. Isiaka at the Kaduna State High Court on June 22, 2026, the commission detailed that Madami is accused of obtaining 4,020 cartons of pasta through deceit. The EFCC alleges that the defendant falsely claimed the goods were requested by the local government, thereby defrauding a representative of Pyramid Supplies and Services Limited. Notably, the anti-graft agency had previously recovered N5 million of the stolen funds and returned that amount to the victim.

Madami entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of criminal misappropriation and obtaining by false pretence. While the prosecution requested that the defendant be held in a correctional facility during the proceedings, the defense submitted an oral bail application. Justice Isiaka has scheduled the ruling on the bail request for July 22, 2026, and ordered the defendant to be remanded in custody until that date.
