EFCC Detains Nigerian-American Over $320,000 Vehicle Import Scam

The EFCC has arrested Adegoke Oluwatobi Adams, a dual citizen, for allegedly orchestrating a $320,000 vehicle import fraud targeting Nigerian buyers.

Agents from the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have apprehended Adegoke Oluwatobi Adams, a dual citizen of Nigeria and the United States, regarding a vehicle import fraud scheme valued at $320,000, or roughly N434.88 million. Authorities are currently investigating Adams for claims of criminal breach of trust and obtaining funds under false pretenses.

According to an official statement from the agency, Adams is suspected of working with a U.S.-based group that targets Nigerians by pretending to facilitate vehicle purchases and shipping. The investigation highlights that the suspect advertised a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG to buyers in Nigeria while living abroad. Two victims, Ikechukwu Osita Ifeabunike and Godson Azubuike Amans, reportedly transferred $145,000 and $175,000 respectively for the luxury car, which never arrived.

In addition to these charges, the EFCC noted that Adams had a previous history in the United States involving the unlawful acquisition of vehicles. He was taken into custody by the Ilorin Zonal Directorate upon his arrival in Nigeria. The agency confirmed that he will face formal charges in court as soon as their inquiry is finalized.
