Authorities in Edo State have closed an orphanage in Afuze, located within the Owan East Local Government Area, following reports of illegal adoption procedures. The closure resulted from a formal inquiry into suspected administrative misconduct at the facility. Eugenia Abdallah, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, announced the action on August 13, 2026, in Benin City. The orphanage operator is currently in the custody of law enforcement for questioning and potential legal charges. The government emphasized that this step aims to safeguard children from exploitation and ensure all care homes meet regulatory requirements. In a separate development, the state government successfully reunited Peter Guobadia, a 53-year-old Nigerian, with his relatives. Guobadia had been deported from the United States and was discovered in a vulnerable state in Benin City. Officials provided the necessary psychiatric and medical support to restore his well-being before facilitating the reunion with his family.
