Dan Evans has finished his professional singles career after falling to Tristan Schoolkate during the second round of the Wimbledon qualifying tournament. The 36-year-old had previously indicated that this year’s Championships would mark his retirement. Since he did not receive a singles wildcard, Evans needed to succeed in three qualifying matches at Roehampton, but his campaign ended with a 7-5, 6-0 loss.
The match faced a significant interruption caused by technical issues with the electronic line calling system. While Evans performed well during the opening set, even drawing a standing ovation for a spectacular diving forehand winner, his momentum stalled. Once play resumed following an hour-long delay, Schoolkate dominated the remainder of the match. Despite this singles defeat, Evans remains scheduled to compete at Wimbledon, as he and fellow British player Henry Searle have been awarded a wildcard for the men’s doubles draw.
Reflecting on the match, Schoolkate praised the veteran player, describing Evans as a phenomenal competitor whose unique style and skill set serve as a model for younger athletes. Throughout his career, Evans secured two ATP Tour singles titles and played a key role in Great Britain’s 2015 Davis Cup championship victory. His commitment to the sport was further highlighted in 2024 when he relinquished significant ranking points to join Sir Andy Murray for his final appearance at the Paris Olympics.
