A hazardous alcoholic beverage known as Chaskale is circulating throughout Plateau State, attracting both young people and the elderly. Residents describe it as even more lethal than the well-known substance called Goskolo. Chaskale is a traditional intoxicant composed of ethanol mixed with fermented grains, herbs, and various additives for flavor and color. While it originated from the Zaar (Sayawa) culture in Bauchi State, it has gained a significant foothold in Plateau State over the last few years.
The drink is characterized by its harsh, pungent, and bitter profile, causing an immediate burning sensation when consumed. Users report that it induces rapid, intense inebriation and disorientation. The substance is widely available in areas including Jos North, Jos South, Mangu, Pankshin, Shendam, Langtang, Barkin Ladi, and Bokkos. Health risks associated with its consumption are severe, ranging from liver cirrhosis and kidney failure to diabetes and colon cancer.
Local activists and family members have frequently protested against the sale of Chaskale, though these efforts have yet to produce lasting results. Women in Jos South previously identified and dismantled local brewing sites, only for the operations to resume shortly thereafter. Community leaders, including Pastor Luka Timothy, have urged the government to implement a total ban, noting that the drink has led to widespread addiction and a decline in productivity among the youth. Mrs. Hanatu Philibus shared her personal tragedy, attributing the deaths of her husband and two family members to liver disease linked to the consumption of these illicit brews.
Former consumer Isaiah Micah described the drink as highly addictive, claiming it suppresses the appetite and quickly ruins one’s health. Youth advocate Timon Dafe noted that the addiction has driven some individuals toward criminality to fund their habit. Advocates continue to pressure the state government and regulatory agencies to enact legislation that would criminalize the production and distribution of this dangerous substance.
