Singer-songwriter CMAT has voiced her profound distress regarding the fat-shaming she faced following her appearance at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Sunderland. The Irish artist, known legally as Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, explained that the barrage of online criticism has made the last few days challenging. She emphasized that her physical appearance is not a deliberate statement of defiance, but simply her natural body.
This incident follows similar harassment she faced in 2024, which prompted the BBC to turn off comments on her previous festival clips. In a recent Instagram update, the singer expressed exhaustion over having to address such hostility, noting that the abuse has intensified as her fame grows. She highlighted that these online environments are becoming increasingly unpleasant, leaving her feeling unprotected.
While comments have been restricted on some of her recent performance videos, they remain open for other artists. CMAT pointed to a fan essay that highlighted the clear double standards in how she is treated compared to other female performers like Zara Larsson and Olivia Dean. Previously, the negativity she endured served as creative fuel for her track, Take A Sexy Picture Of Me. Her representatives have declined to provide further comment on the matter.
