A Chinese computing system named LineShine has claimed the title of the world’s most powerful supercomputer, marking the end of nearly ten years of American leadership. This development highlights China’s commitment to advancing its domestic technology sector.
The TOP500 list, announced at the ISC conference in Hamburg, Germany, placed LineShine in the number one position. This is the first time a system from China has headed the list since 2017. The ranking, which tracks global computing capabilities, has been updated biannually since 1993.
LineShine surpassed the US Energy Department’s El Capitan, which previously held the top spot and has now dropped to second place. Situated in Shenzhen, China, the new leader achieves a sustained performance of 2.2 exaflops. Notably, the machine utilizes exclusively Chinese-designed processors, representing a departure from the reliance on American chips common in high-performance computing.
While the US maintains a strong presence with three of the top four systems, including the California-based El Capitan at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the global landscape is shifting. Germany’s JUPITER Booster currently secures the fifth position on the list.
