Chelsea has officially acquired French international defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for a fee of £52 million. The 26-year-old has committed to a contract running through 2032. After moving to Palace from Wolfsburg for £15.5 million in 2024, Lacroix became a defensive mainstay under manager Oliver Glasner, contributing to 55 matches as the club secured the Uefa Conference League title.
A veteran of seven international caps, Lacroix also played three times for France during the 2026 World Cup, helping his side finish fourth. His arrival marks Chelsea’s third summer signing as the club transitions to the leadership of new head coach Xabi Alonso, following the earlier acquisitions of Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra. Additionally, Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha have officially joined the squad this month after terms were settled in 2025.
Chelsea targeted Lacroix specifically to inject physicality and leadership into a struggling defensive unit, eventually favoring him over other candidates like John Stones and Jacobo Ramon. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali signaled a shift in strategy, aiming to balance the existing youth core of players like Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill with more experienced additions. This change was further evidenced by the club’s recent interest in 34-year-old Granit Xhaka, signaling that the organization is moving toward a more pragmatic recruitment model.
