Organizers have confirmed that Canada will officially compete in the Eurovision Song Contest starting in 2027. This marks the first time a new nation has entered the competition since Australia joined in 2015. The inclusion follows a tumultuous period for the event, characterized by the withdrawal of countries like Spain and Ireland due to disputes over Israel’s participation.
Canada’s entry became possible after the national broadcaster, CBC/Radio-Canada, secured full membership with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). While this is a debut for the country, Canadian artists have a history with the contest. Celine Dion notably won for Switzerland in 1988, while other performers like Natasha St-Pier and La Zarra have represented France in previous years.
Canada is scheduled to make its inaugural appearance during the 2027 semi-finals held in Sofia, Bulgaria, following Bulgarian artist Dara’s victory in 2026. Further information regarding the selection process for the Canadian representative is expected to be released by the CBC later this year. The EBU expressed optimism about the addition, with director general Noel Curran stating that Canada’s presence strengthens the collective.
