CAN Nasarawa Chairman labels abstaining from voting a sin

Rev. Dr. Sunday Emma, CAN Chairman for Nasarawa State, has urged Christians to view voting as a spiritual and civic obligation, warning that abstaining from elections is a sin.

The Nasarawa State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Dr. Sunday Emma, has called on Christians to engage actively in the electoral process, describing the refusal to vote as a sinful act. Speaking in Lafia, Emma emphasized that citizens hold a biblical duty to obey governing authorities and perform their civic obligations.

He noted that remaining passive while expecting positive societal changes is unproductive. Instead, he urged believers to fulfill their role by casting ballots, regardless of concerns regarding process integrity. The cleric encouraged citizens to participate in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and reject the belief that their votes hold no value.

Emma highlighted that voter apathy allows poor governance to thrive, leading to issues such as economic hardship and inadequate public services. He encouraged voters to protect their ballots peacefully and expressed concern over the trend of judicial interventions determining election winners rather than the electorate. He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain fairness and requested that the judiciary act with impartiality.

Reflecting on his nearly five-year tenure as CAN chairman, which concludes soon under the organization’s constitution, Emma focused on his efforts to foster unity among Christians. He praised the administration of Governor Abdullahi Sule for promoting religious harmony and highlighted the ongoing collaboration between CAN and the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) in maintaining peace through consistent dialogue.
