A tragic head-on collision between two passenger buses in southern Niger has claimed the lives of 22 individuals, 17 of whom were military personnel. The transport ministry confirmed that the incident occurred on Friday evening approximately 50 kilometers from the town of Madaoua. In addition to the fatalities, 37 people sustained injuries.
State news agency ANP reported that one of the vehicles was transporting soldiers, and officials have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. This event coincides with ongoing government efforts to improve road safety awareness in the Sahel nation, where traffic accidents are common.
Data from the Nigerien Agency for Road Safety indicates that in 2025, the country experienced over 7,000 traffic accidents. These incidents resulted in more than 1,200 deaths and 4,400 serious injuries. Authorities cite speeding, impaired driving, and inadequate road and vehicle maintenance as the primary factors contributing to the high frequency of these accidents.
