Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, recently dismissed claims of internal government conflict, asserting his position as the nation’s sole authority. During a gathering in Ouahigouya, the 38-year-old leader stated that only one captain can steer the ship, threatening swift removal for anyone who defies his command.
Rumors of instability within the junta, which seized power in September 2022, have circulated due to the prolonged public disappearance of two key figures: Oumarou Yabre and Farouk Azaria Sorgho. Yabre, who leads the intelligence services, has not been seen since late May, with sources noting his absence from official ceremonies and a reduction in his security detail. Concurrently, several associates linked to Yabre have faced arrest or removal from office.
Sorgho, the regime’s spokesman and commander of a specialized battalion, has also remained out of the public eye since mid-May. Reports suggest his command has been transferred to a deputy, while members of his family have faced detention. In response to these developments, security measures around the capital have been reinforced, including new checkpoints near the presidential palace.
